Australian Bureau of Statistics

The Australian Bureau of Statistics provides data on all industries. Tourism collections include:

  • Survey of Tourist Accommodation: A virtual census of tourist accommodation establishments. Data items include capacity, room nights and occupancy rates. Publications are produced quarterly.
  • Overseas Arrivals and Departures: Data collected from passenger cards, including usual place of residence, main port of arrival, main state of stay and purpose of visit both for arrivals and departures. This publication is produced monthly, quarterly and annually.

Tourism Research Australia

Tourism Research Australia, a business unit of The Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism, collects research and intelligence across domestic and international markets and the tourism industry and undertakes respected, reliable research and analysis.

Tourism Research Australia manages tourism surveys that cover the inbound, domestic and outbound markets. Key information collected from travellers includes expenditure, places visited, activities, accommodation, transportation and demographics.

Tourism Forecasting Committee

The Tourism Forecasting Committee provides present and potential tourism investors, tourism operators and governments with forecasts of activity across all tourism sectors including domestic, international and outbound tourism.

Sustainable Tourism CRC

The Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre (STCRC) was established under the Australian Government's Cooperative Research Centres Program to underpin the development of a dynamic, internationally competitive, and sustainable tourism industry. The STCRC is a not-for-profit company owned by its industry, government and university partners.

Australian Regional Tourism Research Centre

The Australian Regional Tourism Research Centre is a partnership between the Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre and Southern Cross University. The Centre was formed to undertake research and extension activities to assist in the growth of tourism industries which would contribute to sustainable communities in regional Australia. Since its inception, the centre has undertaken numerous projects, produced various occasional papers as well as industry-relevant kits.
