Industry snapshot

The Victorian tourism industry employs around 210,000 people and contributes more than $21.7 billion to the State's economy. Tourism, perhaps more than any other industry, is about people – with the right knowledge, service skills and expertise.

In 2014-15, tourism directly generated approximately 137,400 jobs in Victoria or 4.7 per cent of total employment in the state. The tourism industry indirectly contributed an additional 73,000 jobs in 2014-15. 

The industry itself is broad and the career opportunities are diverse. The Victorian Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) defines the industry as comprising six core sectors:

  • Events
  • Accommodation
  • Attractions
  • Transport
  • Service/hospitality (restaurants within popular tourism hotspots)
  • Destination marketing

Your career journey

Unlike other industries, the career pathways in the tourism industry are endless. There are plenty ways to get started on building a career that is right for you. This section provides information on training and development, leadership programs and awards.

Victorian Training Guarantee
The Victorian Training Guarantee (VTG) External link External link provides Government-subsidised training to help you get the skills you need to get a job. The VTG can help you if you have no post-school qualifications or want to get basic skills that will prepare you for entering the workforce.

Work experience/internships
Getting involved in work experience and internship activities gives you new opportunities to build on your existing job skills, learn and develop new skills, network with employers, obtain references and improve your chance of finding a job.
