Ricky Swallow created quite a stir a
few years back as Australia's representative at 2005's Venice Biennale, with his
super-realistic carved wooden sculptures depicting oddly significant scenes such as a skull resting in a beanbag and a fish swimming around the inside of a tyre.
Now based in LA, Swallow shows new work
regularly, as well as collecting amazing antiquities and displaying them on his lovingly maintained blog.
NGV Australia's
newest exhibition, Ricky Swallow: The
Bricoleur is a stunning collection of still lifes and never-before-seen watercolour paintings. It's on until February.
The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, Fed Square, Flinders Street, Melbourne.
Tel: 03 8620 2222.

They say a certain touring actress always takes her Antoine Watteau painting with her in a trunk so that the walls of hotels she stays in aren't bland. Well she can pack
light for Melbourne, because the Art Series Hotel Group arrives here in November. Their first local boutique
hotel will be filled with works by Australia's favourite bad-boy artist, Adam Cullen. Furthermore, until 28 February 2010, The Cullen is offering Lost and Found subscribers ten per cent off their standard rate per night, or three nights for the price of two ($458). Just quote 'Lost and Found'
when booking direct on 1800 278 468 or emailing reservations@artserieshotels.com.au. Conditions apply.
164 Commercial Road, Prahran.

Once again, the Melbourne
International Arts Festival (MIAF) has hit town with a program boldly straddling the line between
fine art and a fierce night out. Highlights include the jaw-dropping Forum series
(think My Disco and
Beaches live), as well as Peter Greenaway's Last Supper.
Chunky Move always sells out at MIAF, and their new work Black Marrow a collaboration with European artists Erna
Omarsdottir and Damien Jalet won't change that. We have a double pass to give away! To enter, tell us which Ben helped compose the original music. Email us (use the link, don't reply) including your answer in the subject line by 5pm, Monday 18 October.
Black Marrow. Until 24 October. Malthouse Theatre, 113 Sturt Street, Southbank.
